New South London Art Studio Officially Opened by Luciana Berger MP, Shadow Cabinet Minister of Mental Health.

On the 10th of May, Luciana Berger, MP, Shadow Cabinet Minister of Mental Health and The Deputy Mayor of Croydon, Councillor Wayne Trakas-Lawlor cut the ribbon, to officially open another Studio Upstairs art studio for people experiencing mental health and emotional difficulties across South London.  Alike their 28 years established Dalston and Bristol studios, the main activity is the creation of visual art within a therapeutic, safe and social space.  However, this new site boasts it’s very own art gallery, whilst adding to the current programme of Exhibitions, Workshops, Performance Groups, Visiting Artist Talks, and  Gallery and Museum visits

Luciana Berger MP, Shadow Cabinet Minister for Mental Health, said:

I am delighted to join the Deputy Mayor of Croydon in opening this excellent service in South London. It is vital that people with mental health problems are able to access the treatment that is right for them. Studio Upstairs provides a huge range of creative support including access to creative therapies in galleries and access to art materials, as well as opportunities to take part in public campaigns and to get involved in the day to day running of the organisation. These type of services are more important than ever, and I wish Studio Upstairs the best of luck with their new centre.’

The day to day studio is ran by Studio Managers who are qualified Art Psychotherapists. They work alongside the Studio Members and skilled volunteers on their own artwork and facilitate positive change within the community .  Members are encouraged to participate in discussions and explorations of diverse topics and artwork, while learning new skills for creative employment, and actively participating in the running of the studio.

The studio offers members much needed emotional space and a sense of community and collaboration. It is wonderful to watch people support each other whilst developing their artistic practice
