Gresham PICU & 136Gresham Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is an 8-bed ward at Bethlem Royal Hospital. They provide inpatient assessment, treatment and intensive nursing care, for men, aged 18-65, who have severe and ongoing mental health problems and whose behaviour makes them unsafe, either to themselves or others, and who cannot be treated in an open ward. They provide care for people who live in the London Borough of Croydon.
There team includes health and social care staff from a range of professions. A small number of people are brought to hospital under the Mental Capacity Act and Section 136 of the Mental Health Act. This is a power that police officers can use if someone is in a public place and the police have concerns about them. They have a separate, designated place of safety, a ‘136 Suite’, where they can be admitted, assessed and cared for.
