The Trustees, of which I am the Chair, meet monthly for a two hour meeting. They consider a very full agenda, including the Accounts, each time with the coordinator. Effectively the Trustees supervise the work of Hear Us, its coordinator, staff and volunteers.

The Trustees have a subcommittee that also meets for two hours monthly to consider the documents (such as those of the Charities Commission and the Hear Us Manual), relevant to the smooth running of Hear Us.

This past year we applied for charity status in August 2009, finally obtaining it in April 2010. This will allow us to apply for extra funding hopefully to maintain and extend what we do.

During the year we have had the monthly meetings of the Croydon Users Council, which have been well attended with many speakers of interest to our members.

Our newsletter has come out quarterly and has gone from strength to strength.

One of our major activities is the work of staff and volunteers to provide Linkworking on all the mental health sites in the Borough, including the Bethlem. There is great benefit from the Linkworkers feeding back problem areas to staff and Linkworkers negotiating for improvements.

One of the Trustees’ purposes is to ensure that we meet our charitable objectives, and Trustees have a responsibility to ensure that money is spent in pursuance of Hear Us aims and objectives.

None of the above work could be done without the efforts of the volunteers as Trustees, Linkworkers and in the office. Not least too that of staff - the Coordinator Tim, the Administrator Jane and the Project Workers Carmen, Andy and Al. I would like to thank them all for their efforts.

Ruth Govan
Chair of Trustees of Hear Us.

SLaM Clinical Academic Groups Frequently Asked Questions

Clinical Academic Groups (CAGs)

The creation of Clinical Academic Groups will underpin King’s Health Partners – the Academic Health Sciences Centre (AHSC) we have established with King’s College London, Guy’s and St Thomas’ and King’s College Hospitals NHS Foundation Trusts.

Clinical Academic Groups are new structures which will bring clinical services and academic activities together within a series of single managerial units.

AHSCs are essentially a way of working together across traditional organisational boundaries to integrate research, education, training and care. Our overall ambition at King’s Health Partners is to provide high quality, innovative services.

Partnership Time Event to listen to views on Clinical Academic Groups and Quality Accounts

SLaM would like to invite service users, carers and other members of the public so that they have the chance to debate and influence the Trusts strategy. The first half of the event will focus on SLaM's re-organisation into seven Clinical Academic Groups (CAGs) which are new structures that will bring together clinical services and academic activities within a series of single managerial units. Included in this will be time for discussion and for us to answer any questions.

During the last section of the event we will address the Government's proposal that all providers of NHS care produce annual Quality Accounts. The aim will be for the group to work together to produce a report that provides clear jargon-free information about the quality performance of the services that we deliver.

The event will be held at the CVA Resource Centre 82 London Road, West Croydon, on Tuesday 26 January 2010 from 11:00am – 5:00pm, with lunch and refreshments provided.

Hear Us Poetry Book 2007-08

Hear Us Poetry Book 2007-08

Hear Us Poetry Book 2007-08
Hear Us is the Mental Health user group for the London Borough of Croydon. One of the aims of Hear Us is to ensure the voices of service users are heard.

‘Poetry is a way to help us express our feelings, emotions, hopes and dreams, and a way of painting a picture in the mind of the reader that the writer is trying to express.’ - Al

Every year Hear Us holds a Poetry Competition. Anyone who has personal experience of mental health issues is welcome to enter. There is a winner from every competition plus 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place entries and the winning entry is published on the Hear Us Website (www.hear-us.org) and in our Quarterly Newsletter, all four receive certificates. However, the standard is very high and in putting together this booklet, we hope to give other people the opportunity to enjoy some of the diverse and talented writing that we have received.

This book contains all entries from the 2007-2008 Poetry Competitions. Themes were Recovery (2007) and Spring, Nature and Beauty (2008).

Hear Us would like to extend a huge THANK YOU to everyone who has sent in their Poetry, thank you to the judges Jean Wallace, John Owens etc for their time and input, and to Al for putting this book together.
